In 2007, SBEC was contracted by Hutton Architecture Studio to design the new three-story K-8 Monument Academy Charter School – the only charter school in the Lewis Palmer District 38. The new building is approximately 74,000 GSF and varies in height, from one to three stories tall. In addition to classrooms, the facility includes a gymnasium, cafeteria, and administrative offices and was designed with recycled and re-used materials. Daylight harvesting was utilized in every classroom.

SBEC's scope of work consisted of:

Gas-fired packaged rooftop variable air volume heating/cooling units with direct expansion (DX) cooling;
Classrooms utilize displacement ventilation with floor mounted diffusers;
Temperature control provided through dedicated fan powered variable air volume boxes with electric reheat coils;
Low-flow plumbing fixtures selected to minimize water usage;
Wet-pipe fire sprinkler system;
Kitchen grease interceptor;
Emergency shower and eye wash fixture provided in science room;
Fire alarm system design;
New 480Y/277V main distribution switchboard;
LAN / WAN data network systems and intercom / master clock system;
Telecom, intercom and security system, infrastructure design, including raceways and termination boxes; and
Site lighting design.

In addition, SBEC performed Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) air flow analysis modeling of the classrooms during design to confirm the excellent energy efficiency that the building envelope and HVAC system provide.
