SBEC is the Mechanical Engineer of Record for the new Wayne Carle Middle School. Designed to accommodate 560 students, the $14.1 million, multi-level middle school with a two-story classroom wing is approximately 99,242 square feet. The facility includes 17 classrooms, a gymnasium, art and music rooms, a library media center, consumer and family studies classroom, tech lab and wood shop, and a full-service cafeteria. The 25-acre site also includes a baseball field, a softball field, a soccer field, and a multipurpose field.

SBEC utilized sustainable design by the daylighting of classrooms, common areas, library, cafeteria and central corridors. In addition, SBEC provided energy modeling analysis and commissioning of entire mechanical systems for the new school.

Other scope of work included:

Mechanical is located in the crawl space for ease of service;
Dedicated DX supplemental cooling in computer rooms;
Kitchen with gas-fired make-up air unit, grease hood and grease interceptor;
Four-zone wet pipe fire sprinkler system;
Fully electronic Building Automation System (Johnson Metasys);
Multiple air handling units located on roof; and
Two-pipe changeover type hydronic system, with cast-iron, forced-draft boilers and air-cooled packaged chiller with ice storage
