SBEC is providing mechanical and electrical design services for the design and construction of a 72,000 GSF addition that will be connected to the existing building by a multi-level enclosed bridge and the renovation of 8,500 ASF in the existing facility. Brown Hall was built in the late 1970’s and contains approximately 86,000 GSF of academic, research and administrative space.

The addition is necessary to meet growth needs of the Engineering Department and provide 21st century study and computing facilities for students. It will support a variety of programs including: Biomedical
Engineering, EPICS, Senior Design, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. It will also include offices, a 150-seat lecture hall, meeting rooms, instructional classrooms, laboratories, and research facilities.

Other key features of the addition are:

120,000 CFM variable-air-volume (VAV) air handling system;
Wet-pipe fire sprinkler system throughout building;
Fire alarm system design;
Demand contolled ventilation for reduced energy consumption;
Low-flow plumbing fixtures for water conservation;
Lighting controls;
Building on BAS to control and monitor lighting and mechanical systems;
New regional 2,000-ton chiller plant to be located in the existing building’s basement and planned to be connected to the future campus chilled water loop to serve 6 additional buildings on campus; and
Engine generator for life safety and optional standby (ventilation) loads.
