Central Plant and Distribution Upgrade
Denver, Colorado
Date: 2001
Cost: $4,330,000
Area: 5,000 GSF
SBEC was the prime consultant for the new central chiller plant and expansion
of the existing high pressure steam boiler plant (125 PSIG). This project required
the integration of a new chiller plant into an existing multi-building campus
and required special acoustical considerations of cooling towers adjacent to
residential areas. The site location was extremely tight and required zoning
variance hearings to accommodate electrical transformers. SBEC worked very
closely with Xcel to develop required electrical utility. Architectural and
landscape considerations were also incorporated to help improve the aesthetics
of the residential neighborhood environment and to soften the impact of the
existing and new plant appearance. The project consisted of a new 5,000 GSF
central chiller plant building, phased construction and final build-out to
3,200 tons of chiller capacity.
Some of the features included: primary-secondary variable speed pumping systems,
a new HPS summer boiler, variable speed boiler feedwater pumps, relocation
of existing utilities such as water, sewer, and electrical utilities, connection
and integration of existing structural conditions in new building, new direct
bury 18” chilled water supply and return campus piping distribution system
and existing three (3) 750 BHP watertube high pressure steam boiler low NOx,
high efficiency burner retrofit.
